In the morning session, Garland County Master Gardener Gene Lichliter will discuss various types of ornamental grasses and how to use them to add texture to your home landscape. The afternoon session features Richard Cleaver of The Plant Outlet in Conway, AR, who will present a program on succulents, such as cacti and jade plants. In addition, Cleaver will instruct participants on how to make a living wreath. Garvan Woodland Garden"The Shady Side of Gardening" Workshop
9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This one-day workshop will focus on the various types of plants that thrive in shade, as well as their care and maintenance. Topics include: Hostas and companion plants; woodland shrubs; designing woodland and Japanese gardens, coleus and a presentation about tropical shade plants. Featured presenters are Janet Carson, horticulture specialist with the U of A Cooperative Extension Service, Bob Byers, the Gardens' resident landscape architect, Master Gardener Larry Averill, and hosta expert Rand Retzloff of Grand Designs. Cost to attend is $45 for GWG members and $55 for non-members. Immediately following the workshop, participants will be free to shop the Gardens' annual plant and landscape sale, where they are sure to find a quantity of "can't-do-without" shade and bedding plants. Garvan Woodland Gardens - GWG Annual Plant Sale: An Earth and Epicurean Experience
Visit the Gardens for a three day, one-stop shopping spree for all things garden-related. Over 40 nursery and garden vendors from across the state will once again turn the Gardens' grounds into a garden "superstore" stocked with ornamental merchandise to help you design and create a beautiful fall or winter garden. Hundreds of hard-to-find plants, shrubs, and trees will be available for purchase, as well as an eclectic collection of garden-inspired treasures for those of you who love the thrill of unearthing that one-of-a-kind flea market find. Hours for the general public are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Members of the Gardens will be admitted free of charge. Mid-South Native Plant Conference - Dixon Gallery and Gardens
With the theme "Natives and Beyond: Sustainable Plants, Gardens and Communities" the conference brings a world-class roster of nationally acclaimed horticulturalists, botanists, and other environmental experts to Memphis. The conference is hosted by Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Ave., Memphis, TN.
The purpose of the 2010 native plant conference is to promote awareness of the use of plant choices, horticultural practices and garden designs that work with nature and have a positive environmental impact. Attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in sessions with world-class speakers who will provide the tools necessary for safe and ecological gardening to increase their own sustainability.
An optional guided field trip through Overton Park's Old Forest and private garden tours will be offered on Sunday, October 10.
