Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation - William Bartram Program 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
New books, art exhibition to highlight program about 18th century naturalist William Bartram. The program will feature Bartram's Living Legacy: The Travels and the Nature of the South, edited by Dorinda G. Dallmeyer, and The Flower Seeker: An Epic Poem of William Bartram by Philip Lee Williams. The covers of both books, as well as a generous insert of color reproductions in the Dallmeyer book, are the work of landscape artist Philip Juras. A show of his work, Searching for Bartram's Wilderness: Studies from the Field, will open that evening at OCAF as well. Both books will be published September 1 by Mercer University Press and will be on sale during the event at OCAF courtesy of Byhalia Books. Juras's show, which will include paintings tied to the Bartram books and an upcoming exhibit at Savannah's Telfair Museum, will remain at OCAF through Oct. 16. For more information: info@ocaf.com

Mid-South Native Plant Conference - Dixon Gallery and Gardens
With the theme "Natives and Beyond: Sustainable Plants, Gardens and Communities" the conference brings a world-class roster of nationally acclaimed horticulturalists, botanists, and other environmental experts to Memphis. The conference is hosted by Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Ave., Memphis, TN.

The purpose of the 2010 native plant conference is to promote awareness of the use of plant choices, horticultural practices and garden designs that work with nature and have a positive environmental impact. Attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in sessions with world-class speakers who will provide the tools necessary for safe and ecological gardening to increase their own sustainability.

An optional guided field trip through Overton Park's Old Forest and private garden tours will be offered on Sunday, October 10.
