Yew Dell Gardens 3rd Annual Hummingbird Festival

Held at the height of the hummingbird migration through Crestwood, the Hummingbird Festival promises something for the entire family. Watch as experts catch, band and release hummingbirds. Kids will have the chance to get up close and personal with these speedy creatures, even being able to hold these tiny birds in their hands.

Other activities include tales from a local storyteller, bird-themed crafts, and kite-flying in the Yew Dell meadow (so don't forget to bring a kite!). Adults can learn the tricks of attracting hummingbirds to gardens and feeders, and they'll even be able to take home a new feeder and some hummingbird-attracting plants for their own gardens. We'll also offer special tours of the gardens for the entire family, and for any shutterbugs, nationally-renowned photographer Russ Thompson will offer tips and advice on how to capture the perfect snapshot. 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.; Regular admission. Bernheim Arboretum - Seed and Stalk Discovery Walk

Late summer is a great time to get more acquainted with nature's surprise packages -- dozens of seed-bearing stalks that add beauty and interest to the landscape. We'll take an easy ramble while we gather seeds and stalks, then craft some lovely dried arrangement or small art pieces from our discoveries. 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; Meet at the Visitors' Center. $5 for members, $7.50 for non-members; advance registration is required

O.W.L.S. (Older Wiser Livelier Seniors) programs are a series of nature rambles, hikes, and presentations, each designed especially for seniors. Please dress for outdoor conditions (sandals are not recommended). Afterwards, you may wish to order lunch from Isaac's Café in the Visitor Center -- rounding out a perfect day! West Kentucky Botanical Garden - "Hops in Kentucky"

While the bourbon industry usually gets most of the attention in Kentucky, interest has been growing in the art of beer brewing. Most gardeners think of hops as an vigorous vine to grow but beer brewers know of its importance in preservation. In this Walk & Talk, you will learn the history of cultivating hops dating from medieval times and its impact in the brewing of beer. Greg Rosenberger is an experienced and award winning home brewer and is a member of the LAGERS Club, an organization that supports the beer brewing tradition in Kentucky. "Bulbs for Spring Color" and "Plants for Autumn Interest"

Purchase Area Master Gardeners will sponsor Brian F.Jorg, the Bulb Man, of Cincinnati Ohio discussing the beauty and value of planning and planting bulb beds in western Ky gardens. Brian is an experienced Horticulturist and raises several thousand bulbs each year. He will also talk about plants that give great fall color in the garden and yard. Brian will take questions from the audience. Come and see the latest in bulbs and fall plants from an expert. The program will be held in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church, 200 N.7th Street. Tickets are $10.00 per person and the public is invited to attend. Mid-South Native Plant Conference - Dixon Gallery and Gardens

With the theme "Natives and Beyond: Sustainable Plants, Gardens and Communities" the conference brings a world-class roster of nationally acclaimed horticulturalists, botanists, and other environmental experts to Memphis. The conference is hosted by Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Ave., Memphis, TN.

The purpose of the 2010 native plant conference is to promote awareness of the use of plant choices, horticultural practices and garden designs that work with nature and have a positive environmental impact. Attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in sessions with world-class speakers who will provide the tools necessary for safe and ecological gardening to increase their own sustainability.

An optional guided field trip through Overton Park's Old Forest and private garden tours will be offered on Sunday, October 10.
