The Lafayette Master Gardener Association is having their annual plant sale on Saturday, September 11th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Demonstration Beds on Coliseum Rd. There will be a wide diversity of hard-to-find perennials, vines, blooming shrubs, and tropicals that perform well in our area. All plants are propagated from those growing in our demo gardens or collected from the personal gardens of our members. Approximately 150 to 200 different varieties will be available.

Cost: $4 per adult; $8 per Scout Come visit Longue Vue's Discovery Garden for a day of exploration, learning, friendship, and fun! Brownies will learn about plants and complete all activities to earn the Plant Try-It badge. Girl Scout Juniors will be able to fulfill several different badge requirements relating to plants and gardens. (Badges are not included). Space is limited and reservations are required. Mid-South Native Plant Conference - Dixon Gallery and Gardens
With the theme "Natives and Beyond: Sustainable Plants, Gardens and Communities" the conference brings a world-class roster of nationally acclaimed horticulturalists, botanists, and other environmental experts to Memphis. The conference is hosted by Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Ave., Memphis, TN.
The purpose of the 2010 native plant conference is to promote awareness of the use of plant choices, horticultural practices and garden designs that work with nature and have a positive environmental impact. Attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in sessions with world-class speakers who will provide the tools necessary for safe and ecological gardening to increase their own sustainability.
An optional guided field trip through Overton Park's Old Forest and private garden tours will be offered on Sunday, October 10. Cost is $100 with registration prior to September 1, 2010 and $125 after includes light evening refreshments, continental breakfast, box lunch and on-site vendor access. http://www.dixon.org
Fall Heirloom Bulb Sale
The 4th Annual Fall Heirloom Bulb Sale sponsored by the Northwest Louisiana Master Gardeners will be held Saturday, October 9th at the Randle T. Moore Center, 3101 Fairfield Ave. from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The sale will feature hundreds of bulbs that thrive in the South and are ready to be planted this fall. We will have spider lilies in red, white, and yellow, crinums, Byzantine glads, rain lilies, oxblood (schoolhouse) lilies, heirloom daffodils, and much more. Peonies that grow well in our area have been added to this year's sale and we will continue to have poppy, sweet pea, and larkspur seeds available. Longue Vue Gardens
Pearl Fryar: Topiary Artist Longue Vue and the New Orleans Botanical Garden will co-host topiary artist, Pearl Fryar, whose whimsical garden is recognized by art and botanical enthusiasts, as well as visitors from around the world. Fryar began work on his 3-acre garden in 1984 in an effort to win "Yard of the Month." The well-manicured, sculptural plant forms that comprise his living vision of peace, love, and goodwill often began as salvaged seedlings from a local nursery. Events with Fryar in New Orleans include screenings of the documentary A Man Named Pearl, live topiary demonstrations, and talks with the artist.
