Memphis Botanic Garden - Ikebana Class
The Fine Art of Japanese Flower Arranging Ikebana is a continuous and lifelong practice of the fine art of Japanese flower arranging. This year we are using four members of Ikebana International, Memphis Bamboo Chapter #44 to teach the classes. Instructors represent 4 different schools, have taken lessons for more than 25 years, and continue to study the art themselves. Interested people should feel free to take any lesson, at any time, and begin this rewarding practice. No experience necessary. Advanced classes also available (by invitation only). Basic Gardening Principles for the Mid-South
At the September session we will discuss and demonstrate the process of over-seeding cool season lawns. In addition to reviewing what to do when bringing tender tropical plants inside for the winter, we will talk about the benefits and techniques of planting seeds of biennials in the fall for a show of spring flowers as well as cover fall garden-cleanup chores. Monthly class to help the novice gardener gain knowledge that will translate into better gardens, focusing upon elements of design and theory, hands-on techniques of planting and maintaining a garden, plant selection, and the tools used to create gardens. Home and Garden Tour
You are invited to enjoy taking a leisurely stroll along tree lined streets, from Central to Peabody Avenue, just one block east and west of Belvedere Boulevard. Come explore the "irreplaceable legacy" left to our care, as docents guide you with details of the history, current decor and other interesting facts about each home. In addition, The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, also designed by Regan & Weller, will be open for tours and will serve as the "will call" location for reserved tickets. Tickets may be purchased on line or on the day of the tour at any of the tour homes, for $15.00. Discounted tickets will also be available for $12.00, beginning August 20th, at various locations including Davis-Kidd Booksellers, Miss Cordelia's Grocery and the Woman's Exchange. Mid-South Native Plant Conference - Dixon Gallery and Gardens
With the theme "Natives and Beyond: Sustainable Plants, Gardens and Communities" the conference brings a world-class roster of nationally acclaimed horticulturalists, botanists, and other environmental experts to Memphis. The conference is hosted by Dixon Gallery and Gardens, 4339 Park Ave., Memphis, TN.
The purpose of the 2010 native plant conference is to promote awareness of the use of plant choices, horticultural practices and garden designs that work with nature and have a positive environmental impact. Attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in sessions with world-class speakers who will provide the tools necessary for safe and ecological gardening to increase their own sustainability.
An optional guided field trip through Overton Park's Old Forest and private garden tours will be offered on Sunday, October 10. Cost is $100 with registration prior to September 1, 2010 and $125 after includes light evening refreshments, continental breakfast, box lunch and on-site vendor access. http://www.dixon.org
